Presentations

Today in class we finished our presentations. The two groups that went today were both on China's side. I learned that many of the types of shoes we wear are made in China, there for if we did not have trade with them then we would not have shoes like Vans and Uggs. Also, there are some types of cars that we drive here in the states we would also not have if it weren't for our trading with China. After those two groups presented, we started out test review. Ben did our test review mostly for us and made us understand what was going to be on the test. There is going to be short answers versus long written out essays. I also realized that i need to start looking over my notes about thing like and TFR and also Socrates. Lastly, i will also need to start studying my world leaders and the countries they are associated with.

today in class.

Today in class we met the shadows from Japan. It is interesting to see what they do compared to what we do. Then we were still working on our projects in our small groups of class mates. I was doing more research on the reason as to why we should be buying United States cars, particularly the Ford sport trac and i learned that it got discontinued in 2011. Even though it was discontinued it was still 90% made in America. The reason as to why it might have done so well is because it is a truck. Many jobs in the United States require a large amount of tools to be carried, therefore a truck has the capacity needed to have all the tools carried from job to job safely. Also, the crash testing on mostly all Ford cars was the best out of all cars. In China, the safety testing is much weaker and it pays off. When they get in accidents, the car tends to buckle in the front, making the car and the person inside probably injured and the car totaled.

Project!

Today in class we started to work on a project in small groups. For the project we have to debate from either the Chinese side or American side of who we should be buying our products from. My group has to debate that it is better to be buying all of our goods or at least most of them from American builders and manufacturers. If we did this, it would probably boost the economy of the United States and we would not be going through the economic depression we are currently going through. In the project i am in charged of finding a product the US and china both make, and seeing the pros and cons of both. Then i have to figure out how much of a car can be produced in china and how much can be made in the states alone. I found that the Ford sport trac can be made 90% in the united states without the help of any other country and without importing any other materials to help.

Peoples republic of capitalism

Today in class we watched the peoples republic of capitalism part 3 again. Here are some of the notes i took while watching the movie:
1. Cameras follow traffic around the town of Chongqing.
2. They says foreigners grew up with cars where many of them are 30 and 40 and just learning how to drive for the very first time.
3. When Chinese get enough money to buy a car it is very special for them because they have something to rely on instead of walking or bus riding.
4. People will cross the road anywhere they want and do not even wait for the traffic.
5. Wanxing workers get paid less money with the new Chinese owner then they did with the old states owner.
6. Buick car ownership has a history in China.
7. GM markets sell gas guzzlers with are turning people away because they can not afford to pay for a lot of gas.
8.  25,000 new cars are put on the road per day in China, almost as much as the United States.
9. Foreigners can not sell cars in China unless at least 50% of their business is affiliated with the Chinese. 10.
10. Chinese show capitalism at its finest.

Part 3

Today in class we watched the last part of the first movie, than began to watch the third one. In the third one it was about cars and how insurance is an important part of driving. If someone gets in a car accident and does not have insurance, then if the person who’s fault the accident was can’t pay for it, there is a problem. In China, if you have a car accident then a Liberty Mutual agent will come to the scene and try to settle a dispute right on the spot. If the accident was a minor one and no agent needs to come, then the person who committed the accident will just give the other person some money and send them off on their own ways. Also, the major road ways the Chinese workers build, they build them by hand. This is hard work, and takes long amount of time. Then after they are built, they need to be tested to make sure they are safe enough to drive on.

Movie

Today in class we were watching the rest of the movie we have been watching. There is on lady in the movie where her and her husband combined make a total of $600 per year. Most of this money is spent on their child's education. The father does not think it is worth the money or needed because since they are paying for a GIRLS education, she is never going to grow up to be able to own her own business or get a big job because she is a girl. In China, girls still get treated differently then men. This shows the poor side of China, but on the other hand there was a family who lived in Chongqing who had a almost mansion of a house and could afford very expensive furnishings like sofas from name brands, and other things too. Then we learned about how dependent the United States and China are on each other. We take very simple products like cotton witch is grew in North Carolina then sent to China to be made into fabric or threat, then sent back to the states to be made into clothing, furniture, etc. If we were to ever go to war with China, which i very unlikely, the United States could be in potential trouble. At the same time however, people over here in the states kind of want us to stop going to China for help and buying from them even if the prices of our goods went up. Many believe this is what we need to do to strengthen our economy.

Movie

Today in class we had a double. For the first part we talked about how the Twinkies company, Hostess, is going out of business. The workers went on strike because other companies were doing better selling other goods and Hostess was making less money. The workers could the decide to come back a work fora little less money, or they could all get together and tell their boss what they think and not come back to work. Most workers chose the second option, making the company have to file for some type of bankruptcy. Then we learned about both types of bankruptcy. The second half of class we continued on watching our video. In the video i learned that most of the items you would buy in Walmart, are made by the Chinese. This is what gives Walmart the ability to sell things to people for less money. I think this video is very interesting in learned about our economy and how China might be helping and hurting it.

economy(:

Today in class we continued to watch the movie we started in class yesterday about our economy. Here are some of the notes i took today:

1. Chongqing is the #1 city in China that a lot of United States people don't know about, but they have a larger population compared to most Chinese cities.

2. China is slowly taking more and more of our jobs away from us

3. They have Walmart and other United States companies in China. :)

4. Kids get trained in things like technology and English at early ages to become successful.

5. China does not provide workers with a minimum wage like in the United States.

6. Government officials make a family pay a lot of money to have more then one kid due to the large population.

7. Poor people are China's strengths and weaknesses.

8. Many Chinese work on some type of assembly line simply because they get paid a little bit more money. If they don't like this as their job there are 1,000's of other people who would happily take the job.

9. At the end of the year they hope to have enough money to afford a pig so they can either beef it up to slaughter it or they can sell it for more money at a market.

10. Men make more then women. Men usually get $3-4 a day. A women usually makes $1-2 per day.

11. China does not have child labor laws like the United States enforces among all people.

12. There were parents in the video who's combined annual salary per year was $600. Half of that income went toward private education for their child.

13. Jobs in the United States are going to people in China quickly, leaving more and more people in the states looking for a new job to help support families.

Economic geography

Today in class we got our test back that you recently graded. I did better on this test then i have in previous ones because i studied and put more time and effort into the blogs i have been doing lately. I learned that Dilma Rousseff had the famous parrot perch performed on her due to her attempt to try and over throw the government in her country. Then we moved on to start watching a short movie on the economy of the word, but for the most part it was focusing on China. In the  beginning many people were at a job fair taking place in a state in the United States. Then they were describing how many of the United States jobs have been given to people in China. For example, there was a cotton farm in the United States who shipped their cotton to china to be made into fabric cotton. Little things like these are slowly starting to make China more powerful in terms of their economy. They are starting to rebuild their economy because they had a earthquake that destroyed many towns around it, making the economy worst for a short amount of time.

Today

Today in class we went over the directions of the paper due on Monday. Mr. Schick taught us how to format the paper we had to write. I learned that the paper had to be centered to the right and we had to put our first and last name on it along with human geography mod 2. Then we have to put the date of when we wrote the paper. Then we have to put the title of the paper like World leaders at the top in the middle. Then, Mr. Schick taught us about how we should not count the amount of word we use and just write our paper. Then we talked about how Israel and the Pakistanis are shooting bombs and rockets at each other and are killing many of people, including a baby. The people are mad and want to put a stop to this; however they think this could probably lead to a war between the people. However, they don’t want it to end like this since 19 already died.

In class work

Today in class we went over the world leaders locations on the map. Then we learned that we were going to have to do a project with the relationships of the United States with other countries in the world. Then we also learned there were two different sides we could take weather we wanted to talk about our relationship with Israel and how the other country wants to bomb them, and what we should or should not do. I think if we bombed them it would be automatic war, but if not we could get in a war with the other side. So the United States is in a bad situation with the possible nuclear threat. Also, we started to find world locations on a map. That is because for the test we are going to have to know where they all are located in the world. Then, we learned tomorrow we would learn more on our project due Mondays  class.

BLOG WAS NOT LATE TALKED TO YOU ABOUT IT IN CLASS.

Today in class

Today in class we sang happy birthday to will and also alice and went over the test we just recently took. Then Mr. Schick announced to us that we will be having a project that will be due in a week from today then never went over any more information about what we have to do. However he did say we are going to have to find places we have been studying and think about if we should be allies with them and help them out, and if we could work together with the chosen place. A place I think we should stay strong with is Saudi Arabia because their king is getting old, and if we still have that relationship with them when he dies we will be able to still buy the large amounts of oil we buy today from them still. This is good because they give most of it to us, even though Venezuela also gives us a lot.

Test day

Today in class we found out that we have a pop quiz. But then Mr. Schick let us use our blogs. On the quiz we had questions about matching the political leaders up with the country they are the leaders of, and then we had to know some important basic facts about the leaders. For example, the king of Saudi Arabia is getting old, so one of his sons is going to have to take over hopefully. Since we buy a lot of oil from this country, it works out good for the United States. Also, I learned that another country we get some oil from that is over 1,000 miles off the coast of Florida is Venezuela. Hu Jintao is the current leader of China, but in a bout 2 weeks his spot is going to be given up to the next person China feels is worthy of running the country for the next 10 years. Also, Obama got re-elected for his second term as president of the United States.

Possible War??

Today in class we went over more interesting facts about the world leaders we are continuing to study. I learned a lot of facts about out leader, Barack Obama. I learned that he was the very first African American president to be in charge of the United States. Also, he was interested in law so he went to Harvard for his college education and got a degree in law. After that he worked as a civil rights lawyer and teacher as well. Obama was a senator for Illinoi, but since he got voted as president, he was forced by law to resign his job as the senator since it is against the law to be president and serve as a senator at the same time. Also, Angela Merkel studied chemistry in school, and then became surprisingly interested in the study of economics. Lastly, we talked about how one of the nations is building a nuclear power plant. We think they are building nuclear weapons, because the leader wants to wipe out all the Jews in Israel, so since we are allies they think we should bomb the plant before they have the chance to do so. But the United States know that this will definitely lead to a war between us.

World leader facts.

Today in class we took turns sharing different interesting facts we found out about the world leaders we have been dealing with for a couple of days now. Some of the notes i took during class are:

World Leaders.
·         The form of torture used in Brazil is called the parrot perch.
·         Dilma experienced Coup d’état, meaning she’s trying to over throw the government.
·         Enrique wanted to broaden the economy and create more jobs. He wrote a book about it.
·         Queen Elizabeth has lived through 12 U.S presidents.
·         Afghanistan has a lot of caves, mountains, and crevices.
·         Taliban was in charged before the president.
·         Karzai has lasted at least 4 assassination attempts. He’s from Afghanistan
·         When Chavez was a young man he tried coup d’état and got arrested and put in jail or 2 years.
·         Hu Jintao is head of communist party in China.
·         Hu’s biggest accomplishment has been turning china into a huge economic power right now.

Some of the leaders we have been looking at, at one point made an attempt to over throw their government. Some of them ended up going to jail for a short amount of time. Also i learned that Afghanistan has many political issues going on in their county. For example, they have many gangs that have done things to people who live there, like the girl we discussed who got shot in the head because she though that in Afghanistan girls should be able to receive a good education just like the boys. Lastly I learned that the leader of Saudi Arabia is getting older. When he dies, if one of his 30 children dont take over, the Unites States could be in big trouble. Since we get oil from them, if we are no longer able to we will probably end up going to war with them about it.

Review

Today in class we went over our research on world leaders. I learned that for our test on the information we would only have to know the leader of the country, and not the type of government they have. I also learned that the ten places we must learn bout all somehow relate to the United States. For example Saudi- Arabia is on the list because this is the country where we have our largest oil imports from. All the other countries have relevance to us too somehow, weather it is through war or trading or other reasons. We did not do anything new in class today.

Religion Continued.

Today in class we began to talk about religion. Here are some of my notes I took:

~Siddhartha Gautama lived and taught in the eastern part of Indian subcontinent.

~Buddha is the central figure.

~Seen as enlighten teacher who sought the end of suffering among sentient beings.

~This religion is not considered to be monotheistic or polytheistic.

~Technically there is no holy book, but they believe in the four noble truths.

~believe suffering can be ended.

~376 billion Buddhist in the world.

~Centers around China, Japan, Mongolia, and many southwestern Asian countries.

~It is the oldest religion around the world and more diverse.

~Unlike others, Hindu religion does not claim any one prophet.

~It does not believe in one philosophic god.

~does not follow any one act of religious rites or performances.

~it is considered to be a way of life and nothing more.

~sacred texts are known as the Vendas, and philosophical epics, such as Bhagavada- Gita.

Religions from around the world are so unique and diverse in their own ways.

What are the different types of religion?

Today in class we went over more about cultural differences. Here are my notes from class:
~In Yugoslavia, many ethnic groups were made into one country. They include groups like Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, and Albanians.
~When strong leadership had died out over time, different groups fought a very bloody civil war, not they all have separated countries.
~In Rwanda and Burundi in Africa, Two ethnic groups were dominate. These two groups are called Hutu and Tutsi.
~The Hutu's are dominate in one and they begun to persecute the Tutsi, and vice versa with the other groups.
~This had led to almost constant war between these two different groups since they did not like each other very much.
~the United States and Switzerland have peacefully merged multiple ethnic groups in countries.
~Korea and Japan mainly only have one ethnic group, making them a lot less diverse then other countries around the world today.
~Religion can be both a unifying and ununifying force among many people.
~the 5 major religions practiced are Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam.
~ Religion can make a group of people come closer together whether its someone in your church or if it is a family member you see at something like a funeral.

Religion

Many different religion's influence the world. One of them is Christianity which was founded somewhere around the first century. The first place in the world to practice Christianity was in the Middle East. The church based its religion on one god, or monotheistic beliefs, because they thought there should be one god and father. The holy book they follow is called the Bible. It is split up into 2 sections, the old testament which were the events that took place before the birth of Jesus, then the new testament was created based on the events after Jesus had been born. It is said that about 33% of people in the world follow these beliefs. The central figure is Jesus Christ, the son of God who was part man and shared his beliefs with his followers. Geographical concentration of Christianity is around the middle east of the country and it quickly spread to worldwide locations today. Another religion is Islam. It was founded around the seventh century around a place near where now day Saudi Arabia is. This religion is polytheistic because they believe in a moon god Allah and its three daughters that go by the name of al lat, al uzza and al manat. the holy book these people follow is the Qur'an. The book teaches the importance of God the prophet Mohammad. About 23% of all people in the world are Islamic. Mohammad is the leader of this religion and follows the Sunnai to teach the people. Buddhism began 2,500 years ago, around 500 B in India. Buddhism however is neither mono or polytheistic due to the belief that it does not depend on the existence of God. The holy book the people follow along to is called the Tripitaka. It is said that nearly 300 to 500 million people practice Buddhism. Even though you don't hear of a lot of people practicing this religion, in other places in the world it is the most popular. The Buddha is the central figure that all people honor. The religion of Hinduism has been around for quite a while, making it hard to know where the very first place it originated was but many people believe it started in India around the third millennium. Hinduism is both mono and polytheistic because they teach about one God that has many different manifestations. Vendas is the oldest holy book they used, but there are many different holy books that can also be used in addition to that one. There is said to be about 900 million to one billion people who practice Hinduism. One central figures of the Hindu religion is Krishna. The last large world-wide religion is Judaism. This religion started in 1400 B.C as a religion at Mount Sinai the great revelation. Judaism is a type of monotheistic religion because the people only believe in one god. They think that since he created the world, they must follow what he did because he is still running the world. The people refer the the holy book called the Tanakh, meaning the Jewish bible. This bible is composed of smaller books called the Torah and the prophetic books. The book is called this because the word Torah means bible when translated. As far as followers, Judaism has about 900 million people who practice this. Some of the central figures of this religion can include Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and a couple of others also. The religions that are practiced worldwide today are very unique in their own special ways. Some of the religions when compared originated from around the same areas, before they began to spread world-wide.

culture

Today in class we went over culture. There are many thigns that can influence a culture in the world. Many characteristics play a part in the way a certain country or place functions. For example, the characteristics are part of the groups everyday life and the ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members is important to keep heritage and culture running smoothly. A few examples of culural similarities can include but is not limited to religion, language, and ethnic heritage. These same characteristics are ones that can link or even divide a region of the world. There are places in the world like Spain where the people there link with the hispanic world. Brasil is the only country in south america that does not speak spanish, but instead speak Portuguese. There are also places in the world such as Switzerland were there are very diverse languages spoken, yet there is little to no argument. Lastly, some places in the world like Canada have two offical langugages which are French and also English.

Columbus day.

Today in class we got our test back on god grew tired of us. Then we begun talking about Columbus day and Christopher Columbus. I learned that he was aiming to get to India when he collided with another land mass. He figured he was in India but he actually had just discovered America. however, when he arrived he saw a lot of people. It is now known that nearly 50 million people were already settled in Americas when Christopher found it. He completed 4 voyages across the Atlantic ocean which lead him to the discovery  of the Americas. Many other tribes like the vikings and others had already been to the Americas. The Britians believed they were Superior to all other nations at that time because they had been able to locate a new region they were able to settle in. After this his next journey was to go to Asia. the route to Asia however was very long and tough which made the quest for Columbus even more challenging.

Test Day.

Today in class we took a test on God Grew Tired of Us. The main characters in the story were Daniel, panther, and John. The boys had many jobs’ they did once they got to the Unites States. For example one of them worked in a factory that made gaskets. This did not require much education, so it was something he could do right away. Also, Daniel had 3 jobs and one of them was flipping burgers at McDonald’s. The war in Sudan that was fought between the north which was made of the Muslims trying to control all of Africa’s oil, and the Christians in the south being controlled. The boys then fled to Kukama controlled by the United Nations, where they formed a type of support group called a Parliament. The lost boys fled to Ethiopia before their final destination in Kenya. After that some stayed and other lucky boys were able to be go to America where they had a chance to become successful on their own.

Helping Others.

Today in class we continued to reflect on what we learned from the movie God Grew Tired of Us. We had to look at alternatives to reflect on because we learned that to have John come to the school would cost way to much money per person. We saw many different option of charities we could give to. One was one about pencils. This charity is about getting money donations from others and building schools in Africa to make them more educated about what they can do with for example all the oil they have. Since countries like the United States are in high demand for oil, Africa's could become more educated and know how they could sell oil or how they could get things to work with the oil they have. Also, we learned about what Toms shoe company is doing to help others. For instance they are taking toms shoes to places all around the world because when you buy a pair of their shoes, they donate another pair to a person in need. I think this is a great organization because from their profit they are doing something for a person who is less fortunate. The last thing we looked into doing was helping children who are born with clef pallet. This is when a child is born without their top lip being attached all they way through so they need surgery so they will be able to suck on a pacifier.

Reflecting on what we learned.

Today in class we looked at possible ways we could help the lost boys in Africa. Many of us found ways that could benefit the people and found possible ways to donate things and money to help better the lives of the others. This relates to the movie we have been watching because the lost boys came to America with nothing so we are trying to prove that we can make a difference in the lives of many Africans. Many other African lost boys in the future will probably make the flight from Africa to the United States in hopes of a better life style. I found a charity online where you can donate money to the charity and they send the money to the refugee camp in Africa so they can maybe get things they need to help survive and make a better life. If I were living in Africa and someone thought to help me to the point they donated money, I would be grateful. The people this society effects were the ones most affected by the civil war when it happened.

Very last day of the movie !!!

Today in class we finished the movie we had been watching for close to a week. The ending was very surprising and definitely not what i expected to happen. The lost boys that fled to the Unites States, or as known as refugees, started a campaign to show the Unites States and its government that something needs to be done to help the civil war going on back in Sudan. After many speeches telling citizens to talk to the government about the possible things that could be done to help Sudan recover, the boys feel as if they have accomplished something. This is something they could see bettering their future if something is done to help. John became the secretary for the lost boys of America which consists of all the men and boys who fled Africa, particularly Sudan during these rough and terrible times. Some men mentioned in the video watched some of their own family members die right before their eyes. One of the men had not seen their mother for seven teen years. He left Sudan when he was thirteen and that was when he last saw her. After three years of refugee camp and the other years he was in America, he saved up enough money for his mother to come to the United States to see him. They are both in tears and do not know what to expect when they see each other for the first time, and are reunited again. Panther is going back to Africa. While he is there he is planning on marrying his girlfriend. Also, with the knowledge he has gained from being in America, he would like to work to open a school in Africa to show the people how they can make money since they have oil which alot of countries are in high demand for. Lastly, John is working to build medical clinics all across Africa. This will help people be more healthy and change their lifestyle being able to possibly live longer.

Day 3 of movie

Today in class we continued to watch the video we have been watching for a few days. We learned that one man is from a tribe called the Dinka tribe. Many of the men that come from this tribe tend to be very tall in height, and he is too. The few men they are showing i the video mainly all got at least one job in the first year of being in america. John has two jobs that he got and one of them is frying hamburgers at McDonald's. Since they only have bikes for transportation, and most of them have to travel far distances, they get volunteers from their jobs who are willing to drive them to take them, and they will take them to their second job too when they are done at their first one. They start work at two am and sometimes the volunteer drivers have to be places earlier so they sit outside of work for about 2 hours at the most and sleep, then they finish their shift of work usually around 12. All the boys would agree that the people in the United Sates are mean compared to where they come from. For example in the 711 near the apartment they are staying at, the man called the police since all 4 of them went in the store together. I thought this was mean because they are sort of judging the boys even though they do not clearly know their background and what they have gone through. Daniel took the approach of going to school instead of jumping right in to getting a job. He wants to get a job that requires more skill then the jobs they could get any day. However, he is starting to see how hard it is to pay for school. Lastly, one of the boys got a letter from his family back home. His family made it through everything how ever most of this aunt and uncles and other family members died.

God Grew Tired of Us part 2

Today in class we continued to watch the movie God Grew Tired of Us that we started a couple of classes ago. We learned that many of the men traveling on this journey had thoughts of killing themselves. Also, in this part of the movie they were talking about how they were sad and how the would do mostly anything to just see their parents again. Then, during the middle the men are beginning to get flew to the United States. However these people are mostly older men and boys because when they come to America they are expected to get a job within three weeks to pay the United States government back for their air fare on the way over, and they also have to pay for the apartment the government paid for as well. When they get to the airport they were amazed to see escalators and id not understand how they worked. Daniel and Panther end up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where they will be living in an apartment together. They can not believe the sight of electricity and grocery stores. When they are first introduced to a potato chip, they cant believe that after opening the bag they are ready to eat, and taste good. Also, when they turn on the lamp they cant believe that a light comes on. On the plane ride over, they are eating mayonnaise out of packets and butter and jelly out of containers.

Movie

Today in class we got our quiz's back that we took last class. A lot of people did very well on it, and most got all A's and B's. Then we went on to watching the movie God Grew Tired of Us that we also began last class, but did not finish. I learned that the lost boys traveled over 1,000 miles from country to country, and did this many times. There are many reasons that caused them to up and move so many times. They include things like the civil war going on between the two parts of Sudan, the government then collapsed at there next stop, then they moved once more to a part of Africa that the United Nations had set up to help people like these groups of traveling boys. Once they reached this camp the fighting was far from over. The boys were forced to fight for basic needs that were in sacks. Many of the boys over a period of time grew to be very tiny and skinny. Also, the United Nations provided them with some basic school subjects. This included Math, Science, and English to help them be able to speak more fluently. Sometimes these camps got so bad, people who attended them though about killing themselves because they thought that was the eariser way out of their lives.

God Grew Tired of Us.

Today in class we started a movie called God Grew Tired of Us. In the movie there was 3 main characters who lived in Africa. During this time (1987) there was a very bloody civil war going on between North and South Sudan. The men are forced to escape to Kukama Kenya. The United Nations controlled the refugee camp they escaped to. The men who traveled in this extravagant journey were called the lost boys. The lost boys traveled for over 1,000 miles to escape the scenes of the bloody war. Then the government in Kenya collapsed so they lost boys were forced to move further to Ethiopia to survive. Part of the reason of the collapse is because oil was found, so Muslims took over the are of where the oil was and made life terrible and unable to handle for the Christians and Andamists. In 1987 a group of people came up with the idea of killing all men and boys regardless of what age they were. One of the main characters, Daniel, his dad died because of the shooting. Most men and boys did die except for the ones who were able to escape and hide in near by brush and bushes. 27,000 boys were killed ranging from ages ten to five years old. Along all the journeys the lost boys lacked food, water, and even shelter. The amount of people went from 28,000 to 12,000 due to harsh conditions along all the journeys they traveled through together. The men and boys who did survive ended up with only bones left, no skin barely.

More presentations

Today in class more group shared their projects. The groups that presented were Nigeria, the United States, and Brazil. In Brazil, the women are supposed to love about 10 years longer then men. However this is not the only place where this is true, because in practically every single country in the world women live longer then men. There are many reasons that cause this. One reason is because men are more likely to get heart diseases and cardiovascular disease. Also, men do harder manual work then women performing jobs like lumber jacks, fire fighters, and other tough jobs that could cause you to get hurt. Also, people in the United States complain about the unemployment rate which is about 7%, but in other countries there is very small amount of jobs people are fighting and competing for. Lastly, I learned that in a lot of countries there in not only one language that is considered to be their official language. There are languages spoken that people have never heard of but originated from languages we have heard of.

Presentations !!

Today in class we begun to share our presentations we had been preparing. I learned that in Niger, the unemployment rate is very high. This means people in Niger are almost fighting for jobs because not everyone has one. It doesn't seem bad, but in the United States people are complaining about jobs, but we have a lot more available then Niger does. Also, in Niger the net migration rate is 101 in the world. This means that they have more people migrating out of the 1,000 people. If they do not have enough people, many jobs will not get done, or will take a much longer time then needed to get done. In Germany, the population is also going down. This is due to the fact that more people are dieing then mothers are having children. I learned the crude birth rate or another name, CBR is the number of births per a year yer 1,000 population. In Germany the crude birth rate is 8.33 births/ 1,000 population. This ranks 217th in the world, and is very bad compared to other countries. If you take this number and subtract the crude death rate then it leaves you with the rate of natural increase for a country over a period of a year.

People, People, and more People !

Today in class we learned about the dangers of our population becoming abnormally large. It took over 10,000 years for the first billion of people in the population. Now it only takes about 13 years for our population to gain 1 billion people! People of the world need to understand the dangers of having too many people on the earth because we could run out of clean water, food, and other necessities. Also, people are having more and more babies in developing countries. A developing country is one that does not have a good government or is still developing something like a sanitation system. Since people are having more and more kids in places that cant support them, the poverty rate across the country is beginning to rise. In Monaco, a rich place near the water with pretty beaches, people are expected t live until they are about 90 years old. The United States falls in the middle where we are expected to live to about 75. Lastly, in poor unsanitised places, people only live to be about 49! Also, the population can rise due to migration or people having kids. There is a thoery that if each family has 2 kids then the population wont go up because the two kids will take place of one of the parents.

Class Discussion

Today in class we had a discussion over the Did You Know 3.0 video we watched last night for homework. One of my favorite facts that i shared in class was it took the radio about 38 years to become popular, the cell phone about 5, but facebook only took 2 years to become popular. The man making facebook had no idea when he created it that it would be so popular making it available in over 70 languages. Also, we learned that cell phones have come a long way in the last 20 years since the very first one was created. When they were first made, you could not carry them around like you do now. Also, now a lot more features are included in the phone. A camera is one of the biggest and most impressing things found in a phone today because years ago if you wanted you phone and a camera you had to use each of them separately. Also, ipods have made music more portable then ever. Before ipods, rows of records were lined up and when you wanted to listen to music you had to physically find the record and play it. Now all the space the records took up can fit into your pocket. With the technological advances we have now compared to years ago, we have life so much easier than people from long ago. As the Did You Know 3.0 said, people studying technology, their devices they are learning on will be out dated in only 3 years!

Interesting !

Mr. Schick, This is my blog from Thursday night, because I just got my blog working again.

Today in class, we went over our homework from two nights ago. I learned that women are allowed to fight and lead military battles in China. Also, United States uses so much oil we have to buy it from many different countries. However, to make costs of driving cars less expensive, we are turning to hybrid cars and smart cars, because they are cheaper. A smart car only costs 10 cents to "fill" all the way and lets you drive up to 72 miles. Then, toward the end of class we watched a video with some very interesting facts. I learned that the very first text message was sent in December of 1992 and now each day more texts are sent that population of the planet! Also, I learned that so many people are using facebook, it is available in over 70 different languages. I enjoyed seeing the different facts that i would have never thought wuld be true.

Today

Today is class we discussed the homework from the CIA website we did the other night. I learned that Zimbabwe has a 95% unemployment rate. People in the United States think that our rate is high but it does not even compare to Zimbabwe or other countries. We are not even in the top 10 for unemployment. Also, I learned that Russia is the biggest country worldwide. Even though Russia is so large, they don’t rank high on the population list. This is because, much of Russia is tundra and people are not able to live in the harsh climates these areas have to offer. Then, we learned about how the United States has the biggest amount of imported oil in the world. We buy oil from places all over like Saudi Arabia, which happens to be sitting on more oil than they could ever use in their lifetimes. US consume so much oil due to the fact that everything we make runs or uses oil. This includes cars, trucks, lawn mowers, fire trucks, etc. Even things like posters in a teacher’s room, or shoe stitching needs oil in order to be made. I learned a lot of new things for looking over the CIA fact book information.
